The Summer Fantasy Book Reading for teens and young adults
Some classic
A wrinkle in Time – (Newberry Medal Winner) This is simply a beautiful book that has blazed a trail in modern children's fantasy by presenting a history of several children embarking on a great adventure, this time to rescue his father. There are some things fascinating detail in this book as a star of life and tesseracts. It is a favorite in the list and each librarian.
A Wizard of Earthsea – Written by Ursula K. LeGuin this is the first book of a series called Earthsea series. Short and light but extraordinarily beauty. This first book in the series follows a young boy named Ged as it moves from being a simple goat herd to a powerful magician. It's just beautiful and brings forth some wonderful themes and magical as the concept that everything (including dragons) has a secret name. And if you know the secret name you can control everything (including dragons).
The Hobbit – This probably should not be on this list, but it is so good that I can not leave. With the huge success absolute Lord of the Rings, this book may be overlooked but I think it is better! It is also in the works to be a movie.
Five Children and it – This is one of the most popular books written by Edith Nesbit which is often credited with creating the entire genre of children embarking on fantasy adventures. His books are public domain and can now easily find free. The theme of this book is: Be careful what you ask. You can do it! That is the message of this charming tale of five young men who discover a strange creature of sand that grants wishes. There is a trick, of course: the wishes come undone at sunset, and worse still, sometimes things get out of hand!
Flight – This book is a bit more complex than previous ones I mentioned here and tends to be more of a novel for adults, but very appropriate for teens. We are introduced to a complex world of the dragons through the main character Lessa. This book is often credited to be the book that has launched many girls writing career. It is the first book of a trilogy of books called the Dragon Riders of Pern series.
A Princess of Mars: The first novel in the Edgar Rice Burroughs series and currently in the initial stages to be written in a movie or animation that will be made by Pixar. This is the first book in a series called John Carter of Mars and jolly good fun in the tradition of the old pulp magazines. It is a favorite of young children who like sword fighting large monsters.
Contemporary fantasy and fiction
When it comes to modern fantasy fiction for teens there is a huge variety to choose from and that, in itself, could be an obstacle. Here are summaries of some of the most popular and I have selected some that are currently scheduled to be made into a film.
Artemis Bird Series – This series of books has a bit of an unusual position in terms of children's books go because Artemis is a genius bird of twelve and a criminal mastermind. The author of these books calls them Die fairies! And books often characterized by a high-octane ride rip and roar. It is a popular series of books with a page large web and even a wiki. There are five books in the series, the first simply titled Artemis Fowl. The sixth book "The Paradox of Time" is set to be launched in July 2008.
Here, There Be Dragons – The title itself is rather mysterious and goes back to another time. This was the phrase that cartographers used to write in patches of ocean that were explored. The basic premise of this story actually will resonate with teens who are fans of the fantasy itself, since it begins with the unusual meeting of three young strangers John, Jack, and Charles on a rainy night in London. Later we met three young men are JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis and Charles Williams.
The Kingdoms and the Elves of the sections – This is a book series that takes place in a world of magic and secrets called Ruin Mist. This book was a slow start, word of mouth made it a best seller. It's one of those relatively little known books and series that is very satisfying.
Septimus Heap – If magic and wizards are a great attraction of this series of books make a great alternative to Harry Potter. The main character (Septimus) is the seventh son of seventh son and the main line of the story follows two children switched at birth: a boy destined to be a wizard and a girl destined to be a princess. Now There are four books in the series and the first book has been acquired by Warner Brothers and is currently being turned into a film released in 2010.
Any of these books or series will launch teens and young adults in an extraordinary adventure into strange fantasy worlds and the joystick or keyboard is not necessary.
